Wealth tax in Spain: rules, scales and advice 2025
Wealth tax in Spain (Impuesto sobre el Patrimonio) applies to tax residents (on their worldwide assets) and non-residents (only on their assets located in Spain). An allowance of €700,000 applies, plus €300,000 on the principal residence. In 2025, the tax rate will increase from 0.2% to 3.5%, depending on the net value of the assets. Some regions, such as Madrid, offer almost total exemptions, while others, such as Catalonia, apply high rates. Tax returns must be filed using Modelo 714 by 30 June. It is advisable to work with an expert to optimise your tax situation, particularly in terms of choosing the right place of residence, deducting debts and structuring your assets. Properly managed, this tax does not prevent you frominvesting peacefully in Spain.
