Moving to Spain if you've just received your pension in France

Administrative procedures for French retirees moving to Spain

Are you retired in France and looking to move to Spain? Here are the main administrative formalities you need to know about to prepare for your expatriation with peace of mind.

1. Check your tax situation

France and Spain have signed a tax treaty to avoid double taxation. In general, retirement pensions are taxed in the country of residence. Remember to inform the French and Spanish tax authorities of your change of residence.

2. Obtain the NIE (Número de Identificación de Extranjero)

The NIE is essential for all administrative procedures in Spain: opening a bank account, buying property, registering for social security, paying tax, etc. You can apply for it at a Spanish consulate in France or directly in Spain.

3. Registering for the empadronamiento

Theempadronamiento is your entry in the municipal register of residents (Padrón). This registration is compulsory and gives you access to local public services such as health, schooling and social assistance.

4. Registering for Spanish social security

As a pensioner, you are entitled to Spanish health cover. Contact the Seguridad Social to obtain the European Health Insurance Card or the S1 form, which makes it easier for you to receive treatment.

5. Open a bank account in Spain

A local bank account makes it easier to manage your income and payments. Banks generally ask for your NIE and proof of address, often an empadronamiento or a recent bill.

6. Take out supplementary health insurance

Basic cover may not be enough, particularly for specialist or hospital treatment. Private health insurance is recommended for better cover.

7. Inform French organisations of your change of address

Notify your pension fund, the French social security system and your bank to update your details and avoid any administrative problems.

8. Other practical procedures

  • Driving licence: Check that your French driving licence is valid for driving in Spain.
