What is Empadronamiento?

Empadronamiento - What is it?

Empadronamiento is the official registration of your residence in a Spanish municipality. It involves registration in the Padron Municipal de Habitantes, the municipal register of residents.

📌 Why have an empadronamiento?

This administrative procedure allows you to:

  • Provide proof of your official place of residence in Spain
  • Access public services (health, school, social welfare)
  • Facilitate administrative procedures (applying for an NIE, opening a bank account, etc.)
  • Obtain residence certificates for your formalities

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Who should register?

Anyone who lives stably in a Spanish municipality, whether Spanish or foreign national, resident or non-resident.

📍 Where and how do I register?

Registration is done at the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) of the municipality in which you live. You will usually need to provide:

  • Identification (passport or identity card)
  • Proof of address (rental contract, electricity bill, proof of accommodation, etc.).
Note: The empadronamiento is often a compulsory step for many procedures in Spain, including access to public health services and schooling for children.
